Bi+ equal, the pan-european bi+ umbrella association

Bi+ Equal,
now registered

On February 9th, 2026, Bi+ Equal was officially registered as the pan-European organisation for bi+ equality. The registration marks an important and historical moment: although European umbrella organisations for other identities under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella, i.e. trans, intersex, and lesbian people have existed for years, a similar organisation specifically dedicated to bi+ movement, issues and interests was lacking until now. This is despite bi+ people facing unique challenges and specific forms of exclusion that differ from the experiences of monosexual people (i.e. straight and gay/lesbian people). In addition to bi+ specific discriminations, racialised bi+ people, those living with (dis)abilities, or coming from socially marginalized backgrounds, and more, face intersectional discriminations and oppressions.

After more than a year and a half of preparation, the Bi+ Equal Conference and Founding General Meeting took place in Vilnius, Lithuania in October 2025. For three days, fifty bi+ activists from all over the pan-European region came together for workshops, meetings, and intensive working sessions focused on the statutes and code of conduct of the new organisation. Article by article, these were discussed, refined, and ultimately approved. On October 22, 2025, at 12:30 PM local time, the official decision was made: the community had approved every article, and the foundations of Bi+ Equal were established by the community. The moment was celebrated with confetti, a moment that those present will not forget.

On February 9th 2026, after almost 4 months of working with the notary to fit the decisions made by the community into the Dutch legal framework, Bi+ Equal, the pan-European bi+ umbrella organisation officially registered at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce with number 99737736. This means Bi+ Equal is ready to register its’ membership who will have the utmost power to govern and design the future of the organisation.

As approved at the Founding General Meeting back in October 2025, the upcoming General Meeting will take place to elect the first-ever elected Board of Bi+ Equal.
While Article 9.1. of Bi+ Equal constitution mandates that the Board consist of at least five (5) and maximum nine (9) persons who must be appointed, the General Meeting will elect 5 Board members this time to comply with the provision of electing only 5 Board members during the first Elected Bodies General Meeting (approved by the Founding General Meeting of October 22nd  2025).
Candidates must be individual Community Members and/or individuals from an  Organisational Member. Individuals from an organisational member must provide a support letter from the organisation. The majority of Board members must self-identify as one of the identities under the bi+ umbrella when standing for the elections. The Constitution defines bi+ as follows: “bi+ people are those whose sexual, romantic, and/or emotional attraction and/or behaviour is focused on people of more than one gender. They might or might not identify as bi+.“

The Board is appointed by and accountable to Community Members. The Board will develop mechanisms for internal work of the Board, including the working groups, and decision-making processes regarding the suspension and/or dismissal of a board member, and the board vs staff interaction and collaboration.  The board will have to assess the need for, creation and work of supporting satellite entities.

What is the Board responsible for?
Here is a simplified and broad list of tasks and responsibilities we believe the first-ever elected Board is expected to deliver. Please note that at this moment, we do not have any updates on the availability of funds:
- Development of policies, internal processes, and manuals
- Identifying the gaps and hiring staff and or consultants
- Representing Bi+ Equal at international, national and local meetings, respecting the provision of conflict of interest.
- Seeking funding and creating fundraising strategies, financial management
- Approval of Community Membership, Partners and Friends of Bi+ Equal
- Communication and public relation management
- Oversee the governance of the organisation

Working Conditions
Board-related work is estimated to take 2hours a week on average. There will be quiet periods and busy periods throughout your experience.
an The official language of Bi+ Equal is English, and we expect the Board members to have at least intermediate level of proficiency in English to ensure solid and smooth communication among themselves.
While Bi+ Equal aims to secure funding for in-person Board meetings, most of the Board meetings may mostly occur online.
Membership at the Board is notapaid position.
